There are countless words that not all people are aware they even exist. The thing I like is that specific words can make you seem intelligent. I love when I speak to people who use interesting words and phrases, it puts out the image that they are knowledgeable. Also I get to learn some new words that I might hear from others. For example, an interesting word I have heard lately is Ubiquitous, meaning found everywhere.
Vanessa, I totally know what you mean! I think the vernacular (describes everyday language, including slang, that's used by the people) is so interesting! When I was a young girl, my mom and I started a vocabulary log, but I have to say I didn't keep it updated. I think I only wrote in about six to eight words and their definitions. I wish I would of kept it up, however, I do enjoy still learning words and their meanings and I really wish I had more time to read for pleasure, because that is where I have had the most exposure to new and interesting words. Thanks for writing about this topic. I enjoyed reading about how you feel about interesting words.
ReplyDeleteThis is true Vanessa, using big words will make you look pretty smart even if the word has a simple meaning. There are many words that can catch your attention just cause of the meaning and how it looks when you use it in your writing.
ReplyDeleteI disagree with you because there's some words that I don't understand , i will take that offensive...
ReplyDeleteI agree Vanessa, many words are out there that people don't know about. I find it interesting when am talking to someone and they use words I haven't heard. It amazes me when i ask what it means and they tell me the meaning. I totally agree with you.
ReplyDeleteI agree that it is nice to know a huge amount of words because it not only makes you feel intelligent but you begin to understand people better. Conversations will come easy to you. Reading the dictionary helps which reminds me I need to expand my vocabulary!
ReplyDeleteI agree with you on that I think its nice to know a lot of words because the more words you know the better that you understand it more and you can explain the definition to people may not have that much of an expansion in their vocab.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Vanessa when she says that "specific words can make you seem intelligent”. There are thousands of words in the English language that have different or similar multiple meaning, So yes adding more words to your vocabulary would be a great thing.
ReplyDeleteSome words do make you seem more intelligent. Depending on how you use them and you know where to use them, then it can really make you seem as a knowledgeable.
ReplyDeleteI agree with your opinion because language does also determine the way people view you. words have a huge connection with knowing how to communicate so if your speaking with good words then your knowledge and the way you are seen to everyone I well.
